For some ungodly reason Apple has decided iTunes requires Mac OS 10.4.7 to run. I currently run 10.4.4.
iTunes loaded fine yesterday. Now I can’t even open it without upgrading my entire freaking OS.
Last time I attempted this upgrade it fried my hard drive.
Really, I had to install a new one and lost gigs of data, including thousands of photos I will never get back. And if you tell me “Ravi, you should have backed up your shit” I’ll reach out and slap you across the face…twice….at least.
Whoever said Mac’s “just work” and never cause problems have never owned one.

I’ve been thinking about “making the switch”, but I remember that it is still a machine. It still breaks.
It seems to me that when a Mac needs fixing, the Mac is in a state of complete FUBAR. A friend of mine has a MAC that will not boot and needs to hit up the genius bar.
I’m not trying to start a flame war. Machines break, often.

Chuck,
My mac upgraded flawlessly this time, but I definitely can tell you from my own experience as an iPod and Mac owner for 4 years…that they do break and when things go wrong, they go wrong big time.
That said, when the machines work…they work flawlessly. It’s probably like having a cute puppy that pees all over the house….it’s a love hate thing.
The other thing is Apple stuff is just so darn expensive. All the accesories…and iPod, iPod HiFi, Apple TV, AirPort, etc…it gets crazy. With PCs, you can show around and find decent prices for stuff.

Ravi…I use JungleDisk/Amazon S3 to back up my photos and such. Costs are pretty minimal.

I didn’t setup a backup policy but just drag parts of my iphoto directory over every so often.
Hopefully Time Machine will work with S3 or .mac will improve and offer a similar service.

Yeah….looking forward to Time Machine! I really just need to buy an external backup solution….they are pretty cheap nowadays.
