I’ve had an on-again off-again relationship with Yoga. You don’t have to do convince me about how valuable it is for getting super-fit inside and out, but it seems that after about 3 months of steady practice, some other form of exercise catches my eye.
Last weekend, after a helping to lead great yoga workout on the Oregon Coast, I got motivation to get my practice rolling again.

This time, I’m committed to not just doing my own practice, but also getting on track to actually lead my own classes. I’ve found that I actually enjoy teaching, and figure it would be a good way to deepen my own practice as well.
First step will be a one-day intensive class later in September. After regular practice on my own, and a few other “teacher training” workshops, I should be ready to start assisting with classes <location TBD> and eventually progress to leading my own classes.
If you are a yoga teacher and have any tips on how to best make the leap from student to teacher, drop me a line.

I am going to a Level One training in five weeks…also the Catskills! As mostly a novice at yoga, I am a little nervous but also thrilled for the opportunity. I am thinking about doing a fruit fast in the next day or two to try it out so the three day fast will not seem so daunting during my training. Any hints on doing Crow? Still can’t seem to get my knees up on my elbows!
Hi Cynthia, you will have an amazing time at Level 1! In fact, I am planning on attending as an assistant
The fruit fast will be a great experience. Check out my post for some tips: http://www.sethigherstandards.com/3-day-fruit-fast-recap/
As for Crow, just keep at it. Look down and slightly forward, and just bringing one foot up at a time. Also try doing a wide-legged squat (Malasana) to help open your hips…that can help you get your knees higher onto your arms. The biggest thing is to just keep trying. You’ll get there!
Thanks for the helpful response, Ravi! Looks like we should be able to meet each other in the Catskills. How great! I am enjoying reading your posts. You seem to have it all together…
I am up early as usual, drinking my black coffee, and trying to decide if I should do a fruit fast today or not. Yesterday I ate awful – lots of sugar and a couple glasses of wine – and am not sure if the detoxing would be too difficult. Should I quit sugar for a bit like you did before I give it a whirl? Not sure….
How important is it to give up caffeine before boot camp? I have friends who said to just bring some starbucks drinks to have in the morning if I don’t want to experience headaches….
I’ve been trying a vegetarian diet with my daughter of late – except I do eat fish and dairy. Not a vegan as yet! Any simple plant based favorites you like that have ingredients that are easy to attain? There is not Whole Foods near me!
Namaste,
Cynthia
Cynthia: I would really advise cutting back or stopping caffeine consumption in the week prior to the training. It will greatly improve your ability to focus, maintain high energy levels through the event and not suffer withdrawal. I am not saying that coffee or caffeine is bad for you, I am just saying that since you aren’t going to have it during the week, the last thing you want is to suffer through withdrawal with all the other stuff going on.
As for veggie stuff, try a stir-fry with a variety of veggies and tofu over rice. You can’t go wrong there.
